"Cheery service and a sense of family is what you can expect at Campbell's Resort, from the maid that
cleans your room to the clerk behind the desk to the staff in the dining room. Even the guests are
smiling and relaxed. It's a fun place for a carefree holiday and I can understand why patrons have
been coming for decades."
Lorry Patton
Four generations of the Campbell family have made what Campbell's Resort is
today, a cherished vacation spot for families, young adults, leisure travelers
and conference goers.
The original Campbell's House, established in 1901, a time when a journey from
Seattle took days by horse-drawn wagon or steamboat, sits behind the crisp
contemporary buildings that hug the south shoreline of Lake Chelan. The sandy
beachfronts and shallow warmer water at Campbell's are a rare commodity on this
55-mile long glacial lake.
Within the historic Campbell's House is a fine dining restaurant, Campbell's
House Café serving Northwest cuisine. The more casual Campbell's Pub upstairs
features an impressive collection of single malt scotch whiskey, and a veranda
ideally positioned for watching the comings and goings over the bridge and
downtown.
An Espresso Shop inside the Café, serving Starbuck's coffee, is a favorite with
guests and locals, who use a walk-up window on West Woodin Avenue, the main
street through town. West Woodin sports upscale boutiques, furniture and gift
stores, and a charming log cabin church built in the 1880s. Riverwalk Park is a
stone's throw from Campbell's Resort and perfect for walks and jogs along the
Chelan River on paved tree-lined trails.
A 14,000-square-foot conference center extends beyond Campbell's House, and the
parking lot is lined with apricot trees, a reflection of the principal
agriculture of the region: orchard-grown fruit.
Every guestroom is linked to the lake with a panoramic view or view plus direct
access. Most of the 170 guestrooms have sliding glass doors and decks, and
those on the ground level allow guests to step out onto a grassy knoll that
leads to a 1,200-foot sandy beach, two all-season hot tubs, two swimming pools,
boat moorage and a boardwalk. Dotted around the 8 acres of landscaped grounds
are cottonwood trees, portable barbecue grills, picnic tables and sun umbrellas,
with larger tents available for group gatherings.
The poolside beach bar is decorated with framed posters depicting sepia-toned
bathers from the 40s contrasted against present day full color images of the
resort. Here, guests order blended drinks, sandwiches and salads, and sign out
paddles for the row boats and kayaks that the resort provides for free to
guests.
Panning the scene from a floating point on the lake, the story of the resort's
development can be seen in the contrast between its eclectic mixture of
buildings. A three-story wing on the south end (Lodge 1), and Lodges 2 & 3 in
the middle replaced old auto court units in the 1980s and 90s. A retro look is
depicted in the units from the 60s and 70s, all of which have had renovations
and makeovers. Two of the oldest stand-alone cabins, still the first choice of
many long-time guests, are perched in privacy on a small hill at the north end
of the property.
Getting there: Campbell's Resort is a three-hour scenic drive from Seattle along
the Cascade Loop or via I-90 and Blewett Pass to Wenatchee
and then north along the mighty Columbia River. Bountiful outdoor recreation
and other activities attract visitors to this all-season resort.
Children's Activities at Campbell's Resort: Fishing classes,
Monart drawing classes, private and semi-private swimming lessons.
Adult R&R at Campbell's Resort: The River Room Spa offers Swedish and
other therapeutic massage and skin care services.
Watersports at Campbell's Resort: Swimming, water volleyball, boating,
sailing, kayaking and canoeing. In the vicinity: Lady of the Lake boat tours;
Slidewaters waterslide park; Lakeshore Bumper Boats and Go-Kars; motor boat,
rowboat, sailboat, jet ski, diving gear and windsurf rentals at Stormy Mountain
Recreation.
Wintersports: Echo Ridge for day and night skiing, rentals, lessons,
cross-country ski trails and snowmobiling; snowshoeing, alpine skiing,
and snowmobiling in the hills north and south of the lake; ice fishing
at Roses Lake west of Manson, and ice skating at Chelan Lakeshore Park.
Golf: Desert Canyon, one of the top Par 5 golf courses in the country
and polled a national favorite among female golfers; 18-hole Chelan
Municipal Golf Course; Lake Chelan Championship Putting Course; and a
nine-hole course in Manson, five miles north along the lake.
