Greece (officially Hellenic Republic ) is located in southeastern Europe. Bordering countries include Albania on the northwest, Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Bulgaria to the north and Turkey on the northeast. Its mountainous, rugged and indented coastline and finger-like shapes protrude into the Ionian, Mediterranean and Aegean seas. Athens is the capital and largest city.
Remnants of the distant past draw millions of visitors to Greece, to the Acropolis in Athens, to the Greek Islands and commercialized villages, with the blue-trimmed, white-washed
buildings and crooked narrow streets that lead to intimate wooden churches where the locals worship and the sidewalk taverns where they drink, play cards and make merry.
Not much has changed in Greece for decades, perhaps, they are content to be known as the birthplace of
Western Civilization.
