Stuttgart invites you to have fun at Europe's second largest Beer Festival
Stuttgart is again expecting millions of enthusiastic visitors at the 157th Stuttgart
Beer Festival (Cannstatter Volksfest), which has now become the world's most
beautiful folk festival. Between September 21st and October 6th, 2002, there will be
non-stop action around the beautifully decorated, 24-metre-high Fruchtsule (fruit
column) on the Cannstatter Wasen. This imposing symbol of the festival dates
back to 1818, the year when King Wilhelm I started a harvest festival after years
of famine.
The festival will be officially opened at 12.00 on Saturday, September 21st , 2002
when the Lord Mayor of Stuttgart, taps the first barrel of beer. From 11.00
onwards on Sunday, September 22nd, 2001, the large traditional folk festival
procession will wind its way to Cannstatter Wasen. The procession will feature
lovingly decorated brewery drays drawn by four and six horses as well as
traditional costume groups from all over Baden-Wrttemberg.
16 days the festival will be open from 11.00 to 23.00. More than 300 venues on
the almost 16-hectare site on the banks of the River Neckar will provide hours of
fun with new attractions and rides. The varied programme is suitable for all age
groups and ideal for families. Numerous rides such as the largest transportable
Ferris wheel in the world, the rapid wildwater ride or the nostalgic chain-driven
merry-go-round will fascinate young and old alike. Beer taps will run almost
continuously in the four large brewery beer tents (containing about 5.000
persons), and in the regional brewery tents and outdoor beer gardens and
