Mystery Weekend on Whidbey Island
Washington State Travel Event ( Press Release )
MYSTERY WEEKEND ON WHIDBEY ISLAND
Langley is a small, waterfront town on Whidbey Island just north of Seattle.
The town is an artist's colony, about three blocks long and two blocks
deep. The city limits are less then one mile square and the population is
about 1,050 residents.
Langley Mystery Weekend is held on the last weekend of February.
We will celebrate 18 years of Mystery Weekends with our February 23 & 24,
2002 mystery.
The Mystery Weekend is a two day interactive mystery play which takes place
all over the little town. It is written by local authors and involves local
actors, shop keeper, the mayor, and basically the whole town.
It is a lot of fun for the town and for participants of all ages.
It started as a way for Islanders to relieve winter "rock fever" (a
restlessness known in snowy areas as "cabin fever").
Locals invited their off-island friends to participate and the event has
grown to be popular with
visitors from throughout the region.
Participants pick up mystery play packets at the Visitor Center.
Cost is $1 per entry.
The packet includes a "newspaper"with stories about the "crime", photos of
"suspects" involved in the mystery, a map showing the location of the scene
of the crime, and locations where printed clues
can be found.
Participants then go around town collecting clues and interviewing the
actors who are roaming the streets. After they decide who they think the
"criminal" is, they submit their solution entry form back at the Visitor
Center.
On Sunday evening the "detective" gathers the "suspects" on the stage of the
theater and confronts the criminal. Entry forms with the correct guess are
then brought forward and a drawing is held for prizes such as weekend
getaways, restaurant and shop gift certificates, as well as T-shirts,
games, books and other small items.
Whidbey Island and Langley are easy to reach. A spectacular bridge over the
whirlpool filled waters of Deception Pass allows people to drive on to the
island from the north.
Ferries leave from the town of Mukilteo (just north of Seattle) for Whidbey
Island every half hour
from 6 AM to 9 PM and then run every hour until 1 AM. Boaters will find
Langley in the shelter of Saratoga passage and Langley marina has 33 slips.
Lodging packages, with one or more meals, range in price from $65 to $495 dollars per night.
