Travel Alert: Venezuela
Venezuela Public Announcement
U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE
Office of the Spokesman
April 8, 2002
This Public Announcement is being issued to alert U.S. citizens to possible
demonstrations and disruption of public services due to a general strike
called for April 9 and likely continuing afterward. This Public
Announcement expires on July 9, 2002.
The Department informs U.S. citizens traveling and residing in Venezuela
that the largest workers' union (CTV), some employees of the state oil
company, PDVSA, and other groups have announced a general strike for
Tuesday, April 9. It is possible that the strike will extend for a number
of days. The strike may affect public transportation within the city and to
and from the international airport. Demonstrations, and potentially violent
confrontations between rival demonstrators, are possible in connection with
the general strike.
There may be other demonstrations and political events scheduled throughout
the next several weeks. The Department reminds all U.S. citizens that they
should carefully monitor news broadcasts and avoid large crowds,
demonstrations and areas where such events are likely to occur.
