ITALY
The Alpine region of Italy is blessed with dramatic scenery. The Aosta Valley in the western Italian Alps is home to such famous ski resorts as Courmayeur and Breuil-Cervinia, close to the Italian slopes of the legendary mountains Monte Bianco/Mont Blanc, Cervino/Matterhorn and Monte Rosa.
Two years from now, from February 10-26, 2006, the Winter Olympics will draw sports enthusiasts to Piedmont, with much of the action taking place in the ski resort of Sestriere, southwest of Turin. Sestriere will host an Olympic village and most of the Alpine skiing competitions. It is situated in the Susa Valley, which is also famous for the ski slopes in Sauze d'Oulx, Cesana Torinese and Claviere. These resorts have excellent facilities, including modern lifts, aprŠŠs-ski and Italian Alpine ambience. From tracks for the beginner to the advanced skier, from snowboarding to carving and telemark, winter sports enthusiasts will find everything they are looking for. As the capital city of Piedmont, Turin has a fascinating history, which dates back two thousand years. It was originally a Celtic settlement. Today, Turin is a metropolis with fine hotels, restaurants and boutiques. It is home to an important Egyptian Museum. The mystery of the Holy Shroud is associated with Turin and can be seen in the same museum block as the Egyptian Museum. "Underground" Turin makes the city even more magical: the tunnels, 50 feet under the citadel, can be toured. The mountains of the Piedmont Alps can easily be reached from Turin, they are jewels waiting to be discovered. www.italiantourism.com
The Dolomites in the eastern Italian Alps are a fantastic backdrop for winter vacations in the lovely valleys, where Italian, German and Ladino (a dialect derived from Latin) are spoken.
Cortina d'Ampezzo, a BEST OF THE ALPS resort in the province of Belluno (Veneto region), is probably best known to skiers from North America as a Dolomite skiing paradise. The longest descent is 6 km / 3.7 miles. 51 lifts serve area. The major mountains of Tofana, Faloria and Cristallo. Venice Airport is only 2 hours from Cortina and there is a bus connection. www.cortina.dolomiti.org
Another delightful resort is ALTA BADIA (130 km of open slopes, 53 lifts) in the province of a Suedtirol/Alto Adige. It is still an insider tip and deserves to be more widely recognized as a wonderful Alpine resort linked with the Sellaronda, a ski circuit, which can be skied by experienced skiers in one day.
Prominent among the ski villages in Alto Adige/Suedtirol are also VAL GARDENA and ALPE DI SUISI.
There are 12 ski areas and a total of 16 ski tours in this region. Cross-country skiers will find 200 km / 119 miles of trails. Horse-sled races, torch-lit descents, and ski shows are regular features

SWISS
Swiss International Air Lines has experienced its fair share of change recently. The global network has been reduced, employee redundancies have been settled and the fleet is smaller than it once was. The challenges facing the airline industry in general are difficult, at best, to overcome. In order to survive within the current global climate, carriers must be swift to implement change and must have the foresight to recognize when change is necessary.
All the news, however, is not bad. SWISS recently introduced a brand new product to the United States in the form of an Airbus A340 long-haul aircraft. What makes this such an important change is that it brings the carrier to the forefront of intercontinental air travel with the introduction of lie-flat beds in Business Class, more room in Economy Class and an in-flight entertainment system that offers some of the best features in the sky.
AMERICAN AIRLINES
American Airlines is the world's largest carrier. American, American Eagle and the AmericanConnection regional carriers serve more than 250 cities in over 40 countries with more than 3,900 daily flights. The combined network fleet numbers more than 1,000 aircraft. American's award-winning Web site, AA.com, provides users with easy access to check and book fares, plus personalized news, information and travel offers. American Airlines is a founding member of the oneworld Alliance.
