People love skiing with a passion and where once it was an activity performed mainly for competition
and racing (competitions take place every winter, including in the Olympics), most people
on the slopes today are there strictly for pleasure. It is an exhilarating sport and so popular that besides the development of ski resorts all over the
world, a billion dollar clothing industry has evolved.
Some type of apparatus to keep from sinking into the snow has probably been around for thousands of
years. However, skiing as we know it today didn't begin until the 19th century
in the Scandinavian
countries.
When going downhill, the sport is called Alpine skiing. When gliding along a level surface it is
called cross-country or Nordic skiing.
