TRAVEL BY ROAD
One year while exploring Mexico we were very close to the border of Belize. It was tempting to
cross over until we met another couple in a 4-wheel drive camper. They were armed with axes,
shovels and a chainsaw, prepared to hack their way through the forest and to move fallen trees
when necessary.
That was more than 15 years ago and the road then was a muddy trail. I imagine it has improved
since, particularly now that hourly bus service is available from Chetumal, Mexico, to Belize City.
If you plan to try it, make sure you and your auto are in good shape and don't forget you need
separate insurance for both countries.
BY SEA
If you are arriving by boat, ports of entry include Belize City, Corozal, San Pedro and Punta
Gordo. Check in with police or immigration upon arrival. Ferry Service is available between
Guatemala and Punto Gordo.
ENTRY DOCUMENTS
Required documents for entry into Belize are passports and visas. Passports only are sufficient for
citizens of most European community member nations, some Carribean countries, United States
and Canada. Visas can be obtained at local Belize consulate. Fee is charged.
