St. Augustine Travel Tip
In 1565, fifty-five years before the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock and shortly after a bloody
battle with the French in a nearby settlement along St. John's River, Pedro Menendez de Aviles
founded St. Augustine in "La Florida," the territory claimed for Spain by explorer Ponce de Leon
during his search for the Fountain of Youth in 1513. In the ensuing three hundred and eight
years, possession of Florida and St. Augustine bounced back and forth between Spain and
England, until finally in 1821, the United States took over.
