Washington State History
Washington State Travel Tip
Washington was settled by the Europeans sometime in the 18th century, so it's a young state
compared to its eastern cousins. However, it does have historical treasures: Steilacoom (1854)
in Tacoma Pierce County is the oldest incorporated town in the state; Whitman Mission National
Historic Site (1836) commemorates one of the area's first missions. One of the state's oldest
houses, the Covington House (built in 1846) is in Vancouver. Vancouver is also the site of Fort
Vancouver National Historic Site, the western headquarters of the Hudson's Bay Company. As
for Port Townsend, the entire town belongs in a museum.
The Washington State History Museum is a historic gateway to Washington's past, present and
future. Highlights of the museum include a peak inside a traditional Coast Salish plankhouse, a
video trip down the Columbia River, a soaring 52-foot electrical tower, and a Boeing B-17 flying
over Washington.
