Bangkok Highlights
Bangkok Travel Tip
Visiting one or more Buddhist temples is high on the list of things to see and do in Bangkok.
More than 300 "wats", as
they are called, are located in the city. The most elaborate wats are found on the edge of the
Chao Phraya River and
easily accessible via the ferry system.
Generally, the temples are simple residents for the young monks and a place for
the people to meet. Most families, particularly the poor, are relieved when their young sons
come of age and enter the
monastery.
Another highlight in the city is the folklore performances. These hypnotic dances are a pleasure
to watch. The
traditional costumes, including those long fingernails, are very much a part of the show.
The Grand Palace and the National Museum are also worthy of exploring. The Grand Palace
was once the home of the kings of Thailand. (Remember the movie The King and I?) The
national museum is located outside the palace walls.
