Shopping in Thailand
Bangkok Travel Tip
Shopping is fun in Thailand, especially where the merchandise (obviously fake) is designer
jeans, silks, and watches. Products that are made in the country and sold in shops around hotels
are beautifully made and the sellers are the friendliest you'll find anywhere in the world. Local
crafts are made of lacquerware, enamel, silver and silk. Dyed silk pyjamas, blouses, scarfs, shirts
and ties, and pillow covers are popular choices with the tourist trade.
Some markets are open all night, particularly in the districts where prostitution is a business.
Prostitution is a means of support for the entire family and the reason for young girls to step into this
lifestyle. Their rates vary, however, visitors considering this type of entertainment, should be
aware that Aids may very well be part of the package.
Prostitution is a distressing situation in Thailand. To stop young girls (as young as 12 and 13)
from entering into the field and to stop the spreading of aids, women's support groups are
working towards education and presenting families with other choices.
Thailand's currency is the baht. 1 Thai baht=100 stangs.
