Nassau Highlights
Nassau Travel Tip
Besides the gambling casinos and the beautiful beaches nearby, highlights in Nassau include the
colonial architecture of the city, statues of Columbus and Queen Victoria, and Fort Charlotte, a
fort with a moat, dungeons and secret passageways. The statue of Columbus is in front of the
1801 Government House where every second Saturday the Changing of the Guard Ceremony
takes place. Queen Victoria graces the lawns of Parliament Square.
Fort Charlotte is located on a hill one mile from downtown. It is one of several forts in Nassau
and clearly the most popular, however, the 65 stone steps, that make up the Queen's Staircase,
also a highlight of Nassau, lead to Fort Fincastle, a fort dating back to the 1790's. The steps are
near to the cruise ship pier.
Other highlights include a 125 foot tower with a spiral staircase, museums, art galleries and many
churches erected in the mid-1800's.. To get walking maps and directions to the above attractions
stop in the Ministry of Tourism Office located across from the cruise ship dock downtown.
Paradise Island, which is just across the bridge, has its own special highlights, like the Versailles
Gardens, complete with pools, waterfalls and marble statues.
Outdoor activities include golfing, swimming, fishing, sailing, and tennis and some of the best
diving in the world.
